Hair color is a fascinating chemical process, but it can be a lot for your scalp to handle. Here are the three main reasons behind the post-dye itch:
1. The Chemical Shift (High pH)
To get permanent color inside your hair shaft, the hair cuticle needs to be opened. This requires an alkaline ingredient (like ammonia or ethanolamine).
The Culprit: This high pH can temporarily strip your scalp’s natural acid mantle—the protective layer that keeps moisture in and bacteria out.

3. Dehydration from Developer
Hair color is mixed with a developer (hydrogen peroxide) to lift your natural pigment and deposit the new color.
